Real Healing

“He himself bore our sins” in his body on the cross, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; “by his wounds you have been healed.” 1 Peter 2:24
No one gets sick. One commercial on TV even boldly declares: "You're not allowed to get sick!" Most people would wish that they could live their lives free from any kind of sickness. But the truth is that we all get sick sometimes. That's part of what it means to be a human being. We can do our part in keeping ourselves healthy -- eating the right kinds of foods (in the right amounts), exercising, sleeping on time and with enough time, praying for health, etc. -- but we cannot really guarantee that we will never ever get sick in this world. But our real problem in our lives is not physical sickness per se. Our real problem is deeper. It is called "sin," and there is no cure for it apart from the grace of God revealed in the Gospel. Only Jesus Christ can bring true healing and deliverance from this terrible sickness. Sin destroys us totally and eternally. It does not simply cause us discomfort, it actually destroys our relationship with God and with others. It causes real death, eternal death, or ultimate separation from God as well as from others, beginning in this life and into the next. No matter what we do, this problem remains, unless we put our trust in Jesus Christ. According to the apostle Peter, one of Jesus' twelve disciples, Jesus bore our sins on the cross (i.e. he died on the cross) in order to bring about two crucial health-giving remedies: 1) spiritual healing, which is total forgiveness for all of our sins (past, present and future) and 2) total deliverance from the power of sin (so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness). In other words, through Jesus Christ our sin sickness is finally healed. That is what true healing is all about. This healing can only be ours if we put our faith in God's Son, Jesus Christ.
