Let the Light Shine

“You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” Matthew 5:14,16 NIV

Salvation is personal but it is not private. Jesus does not save us just so we can enjoy His blessings for ourselves, while we wait for His blessed second coming. The goal is not merely to experience forgiveness of sins and a righteous standing before the Almighty God, and then just go about enjoying the Christian sub-culture in the here and now before we go to heaven. This kind of Christianity is a distortion of the truth. It is consumer Christianity, not biblical Christianity. Jesus saves us by grace through faith so that He can use us also as a witness to the reality of His kingdom which is here now but not yet. Our chief end is not just to enjoy Him forever but also to glorify Him by living just like Him today. This is possible now because of the Holy Spirit, if you are truly born again. He does not just justify us and forgives us; He also transforms us and continues to transform us by His Spirit. He is in the process of restoring the image of God in us. Consequently, the goal is to make us more Christlike over time as we cooperate with His grace. The result is a change in our character, our relationships, and more importantly in our works or what we do with our time, talents and treasure. The reason is so that He can use us as a credible witness to the kingdom of God, which is now present spiritually but will soon be present physically when Jesus returns. Our lives today must glorify our Father in heaven. The proof of our genuine salvation are the good works which God does in and through us as we obey Him. Let the light inside of us shine.
